For this exercise on cinematography and editing, you should also be able to recognize different types of shots and editing techniques

The exercise contains some shots/editing description. Your job is to provide images, video OR illustrations that demonstrate these shots/ editing techniques. Please provide reference links if images, video or illustrations are not created by you!

1.       High angle

Tilts down to make the character appear vulnerable and makes you feel sorry for them. This usually shows the character above eye level.

2.       Low angle

This shot is usually bellow eye level. This makes the character seem more powerful and confident.

3.       Dutch angle

This is shown sideward to show lack of control, imbalance and anxiety.

4.       Establishing (extreme long) shot

An establishing shot will set the scene of a movie and determine what genre the film may be; it is generally shot ¼ of a mile away.

5.       long shot

Long shot is of a human figure generally the main character/characters in their setting. In view of the character you get the idea of their costumes.

6.       medium shot

Medium shots focus on dialogue as the setting has been established. There are three types of medium shots;

Shows very little background, close up of face and shows emotion. Includes close-ups of objects and features.

8.       extreme close up

A closer frame value than a close-up; i.e. showing parts of the face or greater detail of an object.

9.       Birds Eye View

A situation or topic as if viewed from an altitude or distance. It can put the audience in a god like position.

10.   Point of view

The view is shot from the persons perspective which evokes the audiences empathy.

11.   Over the shoulder shot

The shot generally shows a conversation from one persons point of view of another person.

12.   Selective focus

When a particular part of the frame is picked out and the rest of the frame is blurred or indistinct it is called selective focus

13.   Fade to black

The preceding shot fades into black from which the following shot emerges.

14.   Dissolve/cross fade

The preceding shot merges into the following shot, resulting in the two shots being superimposed. The longer the dissolve the more noticeable the superimposition becomes.

15.   Wipe

A transition between shots in which a line passes across the screen, eliminating the first shot as it goes and replacing it with the next one. A very dynamic and noticeable transition, it is usually employed in action or adventure films.
